Don Melchor 2021 among the Top 3 Best Wines of Chile by James Suckling

Don Melchor's Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto once again secures an outstanding position in James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of Chile for 2023.

In 2023, James Suckling, a highly influential figure in the wine industry, awarded the 2021 vintage of Don Melchor an impressive 99 points. As a result, this vintage secured the third spot on the Top 100 Wines of Chile 2023 list published annually on Suckling’s website. This is the fourth time Don Melchor has been included in this prestigious ranking, with the 2018 vintage, which received a perfect score of 100 points, occupying the top spot in 2020.

Viña Don Melchor’s Technical Director and CEO, Enrique Tirado, describes the 2021 vintage as giving them highly expressive wines with great concentration, density, and length. The fruit quality and texture of each variety grown in the Don Melchor Vineyard are highlighted, displaying a fine balance between delicacy and energy. The wines have extremely expressive flavors and aromas.

Zekun Shuai, editor of JamesSuckling.com, describes the wine: “Ashy graphite, cassis, iron, blackberries and a touch of cigar box and chocolate. Lots of violets as well. Rich and intense, with a full-bodied palate. It shows density and very fine yet structured tannins. It has a long and intense finish with lots of flavors. 93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc and 3% merlot. It’s one of the best of the last few years. Drinkable now, but will grow and hold well over the next 20 years.”

The unquestionable quality, excellence and enological consistency of this unique wine, which reflects the finesse, balance and complexity of the Puente Alto D.O., is once again confirmed through this recognition, while reaffirming its status as one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in the world.
