In his most recent report on Chile, published April 10, the Spanish critic Luis Gutiérrez, who is responsible for tasting Chilean wines for Robert Parker’s specialized wine media, The Wine Advocate, granted the 2020 Don Melchor 94 points and praised this icon Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, calling it “very classic, produced mostly with ungrafted vines with a massal selection that deliver the purest expression of the grapes on the rocky Maipo soils in Puente Alto.”
In his note, Gutiérrez described the wine as “polished and sleek, elegant, without any heat, balanced and with developed aromas, starting with tertiary notes of brick dust, cedar and tobacco. The tannins are very polished and elegant, with pungent, ripe flavors in the finish.”
After tasting nearly 1,000 wines between last year and his visit to Chile in late February of this year, the critic once again applauded the quality and consistency achieved by the Chilean wines, especially in the vintages between 2019 and 2022, including the 2020 Don Melchor among them.
It is important to point out that Luis Gutiérrez is one of the wine world’s most influential critics and is especially known for his evaluations of the wines of Spain, Chile, and Argentina as a member of the Robert Parker team.
