On International Cabernet Sauvignon Day, it is impossible not to reflect on the journey that led a Chilean wine to achieve the highest recognition in the wine industry.

With its 2021 vintage, Don Melchor was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator, becoming the world’s No. 1 wine and positioning both Chile and Puente Alto among the great international benchmarks for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Since then, I have often been asked the same question: what makes a wine the No. 1 wine in the world?

My answer is simple: no great wine is born from a single vintage.

Great wines are built over time. They are the result of a long-term vision, the conviction of a dedicated team, and an ongoing pursuit to deepen our understanding of the place from which they originate. Recognition is important, but behind every accolade lie years of observation, learning and dedication.

At Don Melchor, everything begins in Puente Alto. At the foothills of the Andes Mountains, this origin offers exceptional conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and has established itself as a world-class benchmark for the variety. For decades, we have dedicated our efforts to studying this terroir and uncovering the many dimensions that make it unique.

That knowledge has led us to deepen our vineyard management. Today, we cultivate 151 micro-plots individually, grouped into seven main parcels, allowing us to understand with greater precision how Cabernet Sauvignon expresses itself across the vineyard. Each parcel contributes a distinct dimension to the wine and enables us to capture the>At the same time, we promote a viticulture rooted in respect for nature and biodiversity. Initiatives such as the Sundial Vineyard project are part of a long-term vision aimed at continuing to expand our understanding of the vineyard while fostering an increasingly resilient agriculture for future generations.

The fullest expression of this work is what we call the Art of Composition. Each parcel contributes character, structure, energy or elegance, and our challenge is to bring them together with precision to reveal the finest expression of Puente Alto in every vintage.

Therefore, when Don Melchor was named the world’s No. 1 wine, we viewed it as far more than recognition for an exceptional vintage. It was also a confirmation of Chile’s extraordinary potential to produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

Yet no recognition changes what matters most. Every harvest presents us with the same challenge: to deepen our understanding of the vineyard, interpret the terroir with even greater precision and continue revealing everything this remarkable origin is capable of expressing.

Because excellence is not a destination reached once. It is a constant pursuit. And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons of this craft: there is always something new to learn.
