The story of Don Melchor is also the story of how an exceptional origin earned its place among the world’s leading Cabernet Sauvignon references. Over nearly four decades, each milestone has contributed to building a legacy founded on the conviction that Puente Alto could give rise to one of the world’s great wines.

It all began in 1987 with the first vintage of Don Melchor. Inspired by the vision of renowned French oenologist Émile Peynaud, who recognised the extraordinary potential of Puente Alto for Cabernet Sauvignon, the project was born with the ambition of revealing the uniqueness of this Andean origin to the world.

The first major recognition soon followed. With its second vintage, released in 1988, Don Melchor became the first Chilean wine to be included in Wine Spectator’s prestigious Top 100, marking a turning point for the Chilean wine industry. This achievement opened the door for Chile to be recognised as an origin capable of producing world-class wines and positioned Don Melchor among the labels most closely followed by international critics.

Another significant milestone in the international positioning of Puente Alto came in 1996 with the creation of Almaviva, the result of a partnership between Viña Concha y Toro and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Once again, this project demonstrated the extraordinary potential of this origin to produce fine wines and helped cement its reputation among the world’s great wine-growing territories.

The ongoing pursuit of understanding Puente Alto’s potential continued throughout the 1990s. In 1999, Enrique Tirado was appointed winemaker of Don Melchor, beginning a decisive chapter in the development of the project. Under his leadership, vineyard knowledge, soil research and a deeper understanding of each parcel became fundamental pillars of the philosophy that continues to define Don Melchor today.

In 2019, Don Melchor entered a new phase with the creation of Viña Don Melchor as an independent subsidiary of Viña Concha y Toro. This step strengthened the identity of the winery and consolidated a vision exclusively focused on continuing to raise the standards of excellence of one of Chile’s most iconic wines.

The consistency and dedication developed over decades received further international validation when the 2018 vintage was awarded 100 points by James Suckling. The perfect score from the acclaimed critic confirmed the extraordinary potential of the Puente Alto vineyard and reaffirmed Don Melchor’s position among the world’s great Cabernet Sauvignons.

The story of Don Melchor continued to add remarkable milestones with the 2021 vintage. Named Wine Spectator’s No. 1 Wine of the Year, Don Melchor achieved the highest distinction awarded by one of the wine industry’s most influential publications. More than recognition for an exceptional vintage, this achievement confirmed Puente Alto’s place among the great terroirs of Cabernet Sauvignon and elevated Chile to the global elite of the variety.
