In his latest report on Chile, published after his visit in February, Joaquín Hidalgo—in charge of tasting wines for Argentina and Chile for Vinous—awarded an outstanding 97 points to the 2021 Don Melchor, positioning it among Chile’s best Cabernet Sauvignons.
After tasting the most recent vintage, Hidalgo said that this is “a wine that is more suggestive than explicit, one that slowly envelops you in its different layers. And in his description, he added that “the 2021 Don Melchor is dark garnet red in the glass. The restrained nose offers pure fruity notes such as blackcurrant with hints of leaves and black tea, refined woody aromas, and gentle touches of plum and red bell pepper. In the mouth, it’s intense with mild juiciness and rounded tannins. The taut palate gradually grows more profound as it develops cedar flavors at the back of the throat before the long, rewarding finish. The added freshness brings out the clarity of the fruity flavors”.
The 2021 Don Melchor is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot and spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 68% new and 32% second use. According to Don Melchor CEO and technical director, Enrique Tirado, the wines from the 2021 vintage show a very good balance between elegance and energy and are full of expression of their flavors and aromas.
