Viña Don Melchor becomes a member of The Old Vine Conference

Viña Don Melchor has joined the English-based global non-profit organisation, The Old Vine Conference, in order to give visibility to and raise awareness of the importance of protecting old vines and their rich genetic diversity.

As a further step in its commitment to Excellence and Sustainability, Viña Don Melchor becomes one of a rapidly growing membership base of The Old Vine Conference, an international entity that includes producers, distributors, organisations and personalities interested in protecting the world heritage of old vines and their inestimable ecological and cultural value.

On June 19th, and as the first activity as a member, the 2021 vintage of Puente Alto’s icon Cabernet Sauvignon, Don Melchor, was presented at one of the largest international tastings of old vine wines, with a total of 119 wines representing 19 countries.

The tasting, held at the presigious London club 67 Pall Mall, was attended by wine professionals, media and distributors, who were able to taste this vast collection of wines made from old vines (35yrs+).

All of the Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Don Melchor vineyard are propagated by massal selection from pre-phylloxera material, brought from Bordeaux in the late 19th century, and planted 80% on ungrafted rootstock. In this way, Viña Don Melchor is dedicated to protecting the legacy for future generations, through the conservation of the unique DNA of these vines and thus preserving the identity of the Puente Alto origin.

Viña Don Melchor will continue to participate in the various events organised by The Old Vine Conference in order to give international visibility to its serious and committed work around its centenary vines and the rich genetic diversity they express in the wines.
