The sixth version of the international conference, The Old Vine Conference 2024, was held online on 17 and 18 October and brought together a total of 25 expert panelists from different parts of the world – UK, South Africa, Lebanon, Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Australia, United States, Argentina and Chile – to present different pioneering initiatives on old vines.

During her participation, Isabel Mitarakis introduced Viña Don Melchor and its remarkable track record in the global industry, then delved into the development of its innovative sundial vineyard project, its core characteristics and revealed some of the remarkable results obtained from the analysis of the information gathered from it.

This being the first time that Viña Don Melchor has participated in this event, Isabel highlighted the importance of being part of this collective effort, which seeks to safeguard a historical and cultural legacy: “This was a very nice and necessary experience. These events show the importance of creating a community around a topic as relevant as our ancient vines, sharing information and knowledge that ultimately contributes to all of us, from our different latitudes and expertise, in order to protect our ancient vineyards and their profound ecological and socio-cultural value.”

Speakers at the event included opinion leaders, academics, ecologists, winemakers, viticulturists and wine specialists in general, who shared their knowledge and work with the audience, offering a deeper understanding of the role that these old vineyards play in the wine industry’s adaptation to climate change and sustainability.
