Matthew Luczy, who recently took on the role of critic for South American wines, visited Chile late last year to taste the new vintages of Chilean wines.
After visiting Viña Don Melchor and tasting 7 iconic vintages of Don Melchor, the wine critic awarded the 2022 vintage of Don Melchor an outstanding 94+ points.
The critic described it as a wine with “A coiled, dark-fruited nose of tobacco leaves, dried herbs, graphite and dark chocolate transitions to a slow-moving, velvety palate. It concludes with a taut, inward finish of gently chewy tannins that regenerates the graphite-laden intensity found on the nose. With time in the glass, its structural burliness softened and melded with additional layers of chocolate-driven richness.”
The 2022 vintage of Don Melchor consists of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and is noted for its great aromatic expression and the finesse characteristic of its origin in the acclaimed Puente Alto appellation.
